Wi-Fi is sometimes also expressed as IEEE 802.11x but is commonly referred to as just 802.11x. The “x” in 802.11x indicates the speed of the wireless transmission.

Starting with 802.11ax, the new naming scheme will be Wi-Fi 6. Also, 802.11ac will be referred to as Wi-Fi 5 and 802.11n will be referred to as Wi-Fi 4.
