Firewire - CF-19

Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Firewire

All models of the Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 have a Firewire connector. Firewire, also known as IEEE 1394, was developed in the late 1980s and is an interface standard for high speed communications and real time data transfers. Firewire is comparable to USB but is virtually unavailable anymore as USB has become the dominant standard. Different versions of Firewire have been developed, each an improvement from the previous version.

FIREWIRE 400 (IEEE 1394a)

This is the first generation of Firewire and was capable of data transfer speeds of up to 400 Mbit/s.

FIREWIRE 800 (IEEE 1394b)

Transfer speeds for Firewire 800 were increased to 800 Gbit/s. Other improvements included increased cable lengths, from 4.5 meters to 1000 meters. Although backward compatible with Firewire 400, this version of Firewire was developed with a new connector making legacy cables incompatible.

FIREWIRE S800T (IEEE 1394c)

Improvement with this version was primarily limited to new port specifications that provided faster speeds to ethernet connectors that used CAT 5 cable.

FIREWIRE S1600  and S3200

These two versions allowed Firewire to obtain transfer speeds similar to USB 3.0, however after 2012, very few devices were released with these standards.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 utilizes the IEEE 1394a  standard in all its models.
