Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that utilizes radio transmission to allow high-speed access to such devices like wireless routers, desktops, laptops, mobile devices and other technology such as printers and video cameras. Wi-Fi is sometimes also expressed as IEEE 802.11x but is commonly referred to as just 802.11x. The “x” in 802.11x indicates the speed of the wireless transmission.

In 2018, the Wi-Fi Alliance, which promotes Wi-Fi technology and certifies Wi-Fi products for conformity to certain standards of interoperability, announced their intention to use a new simple naming scheme to make it easier for the public to understand the capabilities of new standards as they are released. Starting with 802.11ax, the new naming scheme will be Wi-Fi 6. Also, 802.11ac will be referred to as Wi-Fi 5 and 802.11n will be referred to as Wi-Fi 4.
