Global Positioning System, also known as GPS, is a global satellite-based navigation system made up of at least 24 satellites. The system is owned by the United States government and is operated by the Air Force. GPS provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on Earth. GPS is a free service that is available to anyone with a GPS receiver.

In 2000, GPS was accurate to about 16 feet, but today, newer technology and receivers have a much higher accuracy allowing you to pinpoint your location to within 11.8 inches. Using GPS requires an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. Obstacles such as mountains and buildings can block GPS signals.
